Giving value before asking
This is the most important "trick" in the U.S. Many people make the mistake of asking for a job the first time they meet someone. That feels like taking. You want to be a giver.
- Before you ask for help, try to be helpful.
- If you see an interesting news article, email it to them: "I saw this and thought of our talk!"
- Give them a genuine compliment on their work: "I read your latest project report, and it was really helpful for my class."
- When you eventually ask for a referral, they will be happy to say Yes because you have already shown that you are a kind and thoughtful person.
