Emergency planning
What happens if there is a crisis at home while you are in the middle of a visa application? You need a plan before the panic starts.
- Keep a "Red Folder" (digital or physical) with:
- Emergency Cash: Enough for a last-minute flight (usually $1,500 - $2,000).
- Visa Copies: A copy of your I-20, H-1B, and passport.
- Legal Contacts: The name of your school’s DSO or your company’s immigration lawyer.
- Never leave the U.S. during an emergency without checking with a lawyer first. If your visa is being processed, leaving the country could "abandon" your application, and you might not be allowed back in.
