Week 1 (Day 0-7): "Get operational"
Learn transportation (transit card / routes / rideshare safety)
You're in a new city and need to get around. Download Transit or Citymapper for real-time bus and train info. Get a digital transit card (OMNY in NYC, Clipper in SF). For rideshares, always verify the license plate and ask 'Who are you here for?' instead of confirming your name.
Getting around a new U.S. city can be confusing, but you can master it in a day if you use the right tools.
- Google Maps is great for general directions, but for real-time bus and train arrivals, download Transit or Citymapper. They’ll tell you exactly which subway car to get into so you’re closer to the exit.
- Most cities have digital cards now. For example, if you're in NYC, use OMNY (you can just tap your phone); in SF, it's Clipper.
- In rideshares (Uber/Lyft), verify the License Plate and ask "Who are you here for?" rather than "Are you [Name]?"
