3) STEM OPT Extension (Your Time Multiplier)
Apply within timing windows (don't miss the deadline)
You can file for STEM OPT up to 90 days before your current EAD expires. Once your DSO recommends your extension in SEVIS, you have 60 days to file with USCIS. Here's the critical rule: USCIS must receive your application before your current EAD expires. Not postmarked—received. Use USPS Priority Mail Express or FedEx with tracking. If your application is pending when your EAD expires, you get an automatic 180-day extension to keep working while you wait. But if you filed late? You're out of status immediately.
Getting your first internship in the U.S. is a major milestone, but CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is not just a work permit, it is a legal authorization tied strictly to your academic curriculum. Think of it as a class that happens at a company instead of on campus.
If you work even one day without a CPT-authorized I-20, or if you work for the wrong employer, you are in unauthorized employment, which is a non-fixable violation of your F-1 status.
