Apply for OPT on time (timing is everything)

You can apply for OPT as early as 90 days before graduation and as late as 60 days after. But here's the trap: once your DSO recommends your OPT in SEVIS, you have exactly 30 days to file with USCIS. Miss this window and you're out of status. Choose your OPT start date strategically—your 90-day unemployment clock begins on that date, not when you actually receive your EAD card. If you don't have a job lined up, push your start date as late as possible (up to 60 days after graduation).
